Over the past two weekends I have been busy doing photoshoots for Cups & Cakes Bakery. That's where I work.
Each weekend my house was filled with cupcakes. The drive back from the city with a van full of boxes. Taking all the turns slow, annoying ever other driver by actually going the speed limit. I couldn't risk them getting smooched, they needed to be pristine.
Luckily I had no mishaps.
Well their was one.... but after the photos were taken. Thankfully. As I was packing up a giant box of cupcakes after the wedding shoot, the box three quarters full, it fell. On the ground. Outside.
I was in my Great Great Aunt's garden and suddenly their were cupcakes everywhere. Frosting was covering the ground. I admit a moment of panic set in. (Plus, not the greatest thing to happen after I had just broke my tripod) At work, that is my worst fear, to drop them all. All the hard work going in to baking, frosting and decorating them. It is heartbreaking when they fall. It's never happened at work to me, thankfully.
But after realizing that I got all the photos I needed and I generally stuff my family with many a cupcakes, so they really didn't need to eat them, it was okay.
I got to have complete creative freedom on the styling, layout, etc. She would just give me a theme such as 'baby shower' (which I tried not to make too girly, because thats just not my aesthetic) or 'wedding' and I took it from there. It was good for me to have a project. Whenever I am going to make something for a new post, it is so hard for me to decide what to make. I have literally thousands of recipes saved on my computer, and many scraps of paper sticking out of old cookbooks. All things that looked amazing or sounded delicious. How am I to choose? Sometimes it takes me a few hours to actually decide on what to make. Having a project where it was cupcakes+wedding, Go! and I got to create the rest was kind of a mind saver. I got to focus more on the photos rather than what I was hungry for at the moment.
So here you go, these are some of the results.

blackberry goat cheese tart

Blackberries, goat cheese & thyme? Could their be a better combination for a dessert that you could call 'dinner'? I think not.
When I first saw this recipe on Pinterest, it was made in individual little tartlets. Well the last time I made tartlets they burnt to a crisp within minutes. Saying my oven runs hot is an understatement. So I knew I wanted to make the tartlets but in a bigger much less time consuming pan.
The recipe is easy and straight forward. The ingredients are what shine here, not an fancy techniques or presentation.
The end result, (with cream cheese in the crust! a first for me)was just as good as I hoped it would be. The thyme is such a nice and unexpected compliment to the blackberries, which still have that tart kick. And of course the goat cheese, if you read this blog a lot you know I forever go on about my love of goat cheese. Go for a high quality one, its worth the few extra bucks. If you live in San Francisco, run by Rainbow Co-op grocery and get some Harley Farm goat cheese. The only place I've ever been able to find that cheese besides the actual farm in Pescadero.
Oh dear, typing just those few words has taken me forever. Since I am limited to one handed typing right now. So if there are a lot of grammar or spelling errors, give me a pass ok? I stabbed my middle finger with a knife last night. Sliced right in deep. It's all purply and hurts like a f**king b**ch if I touch it.
So just a quick update on my life.
Besides the busted finger, on Tuesday/Wednesday my glands or whatever swelled up huge, so my face looked really weird and hurt horribly. So I had to go to the doctor and his reaction was 'Weird! I have never seen that before!' Great...
People in my family keep getting sick, like the bad kind of sick. One funeral to attend next weekend. I hope there aren't any more for a long while...
and finally..... I signed up for motorcycle lessons! Oh yes this girl is going to ride a motorcycle. Not just a passenger anymore. Whenever I used to ask a certain guy from the past to teach me how to ride he would always say yeah sure but never actually do it. So after many failed attempts to try and plan a lesson, he finally came out with the 'your a girl and your just going to drop and f-up my bike'. So a big screwwwww youuuuu. This girl is doing it on her own. Only if he would give me my darn helmet back.....
enjoy the photos!

S'mores Hand Pies

S'mores are kind of magical thing for me. They are full of memories in every bite and they make me love what I would normally never eat.
Like most, s'mores were the epic camping food that somehow would make the whole trip worth while to me. Sitting next to the campfire as a kid, trying to burn my marshmallows till they were about to fall off the stick. All of my crazy family around me, Grampa smoking cigars and playing backgammon with my aunts and uncles. My mom always taking care of everyone and my grandma probably taking care of me and my sister to give my mom a break. Camping used to be a once a year tradition for my family. Go up to lake tahoe, to the same campsite every year, swim in the freezing lake, if only for a second. While those days are very far behind me, from people moving away. And from the last time we went getting snowed on and our tents collapsing on us in the early hours of the morning. I remember my sister getting the bulk of the tent falling on her, so there were tears streaming everyone. My Grampa, standing outside the tent taking photos and laughing. We ended up having to pack up our frozen things, after trying to defrost the shoes filled with snow that were left out, and staying at a hotel. Somehow a next trip never happened... My family is crazy, 100%, but they are mine and as much as I have refused to go to family functions, tell them all they are mental, it was always a good time camping and I love those crazy people.
So back to the food. Chocolate, graham crackers and marshmallows. Two out of three I would generally eat. Marshmallows are something I would normally never eat. Too chalky, squishy, the after taste, everything just always seemed wrong with them to me. Admittedly the only marshmallows I have tried come in big clear packages from the grocery store, I should give those handmade ones a go.
But when you mix just those three ingredients together, add a bit of fire, it's heavenly.
So given that I have gone camping once in the past probably 15 years or so, I get massive cravings for s'mores. I've had them a few times outside of camping, probably in someone's back yard or over the stove in high school when we all got bored. So I new I had to do some type of s'mores-ish post for here. Now there will be more variations to come in the future. This one isn't perfect, you dont get that crunchy char from the open flame but it's the gooey marshmallow and melty chocolate that this recipe will tide me over on.
I used mini marshmallows to stuff in the pies but I'm thinking that mixing the graham cracker crumbs and chocolate together with marshmallow fluff to create more of a batter you would scoop on to the pie would work better. Give it a go, give both a go if you are extra hungry, change it up a bit, these pies are meant to be fun. Don't take them too seriously, how could you, its marshmallow chocolate and graham crackers stuffed into a flaky shortcrust. Sugar overload loveliness

First few weeks of my new job have been going really well. I wake up at 2.30 every morning to get there by 4 am. I am finally starting to adjust to this schedule. At first I would just be working on practically no sleep because I couldn't fall asleep so early. But now by 8, I'm spent. Aimless internet surfing or watch tv then off to bed. Except on Sunday of course when I stay up later just to watch GIRLS. Of course I dvr it so I could just watch it the next day. But how could I wait? That show is beyond amazing.
I spend my day, technically morning, making fruit pies, cream or custard pies, a slab pie, galettes, cookies, and puddings. And more to be added to the menu eventually. Often changing by whatever produce is in season.
It all gets delivered a few miles down to the completely redone Oakville Grocery. Has anyone been in it? It is so gorgeous. The mix of old and new, the selectively curated assortment of foodie goodies, the old glass cooler doors now built into the wall to hold all the speciality beverages. I need to go take photos of the inside of it so you all will know what I mean.
On thursday I have to make a cupcake for a special luncheon that is going on. 'So what kind of cupcake do you what? What type of frosting? An american buttercream? meringue? etc'I get the response, 'I don't give a shit, just make it taste good.' It is pretty awesome.
Then when 12.30 rolls around my shift ends and I now... ahem.... drive home in my new Fiat 500! I have my own car for the first time in my life. No more driving around my parent's mini van that used to be my dad's old work car. It's all black. and amazing.

blueberry chocolate frangipane tart

I wasn't even going to photograph this. I just made it quickly after work one day because... I don't know. I was bored? I just wanted to accomplish something. So I made this with no intention of taking the time to do photos. But then it came out of the oven, looked better than I thought it would so I snapped a few quick shots.
The crust gets really crunchy, the filling is more bittersweet than sweet and the blueberries pop with every bite you take. I think this would work really well with blackberries or raspberries. Something tart and full of flavor. Blueberries are nice, but a bit bland for me. They are more of a subtle flavor that, for me, tends to gets lost when mixed with other things.
*ok so it's technically not a frangipane because it doesn't have ground almonds. I used cocoa powder instead. But close enough... If you feel so inclined to make it a proper frangipane just substitute half of the cocoa powder for ground almonds.*Nothing really new to report on here. Life is the same. Every day. Wake up ridiculously early. Bake for the next 8 hours then come home and accomplish generally nothing. I always have lofty ambitions of all the things I can make, Oh it's still light enough to do photos! I think. But then I come home and sit in front of the tv and doze off. I am just so tired all the time. Its gotten to the point where I'm feeling awkward every time I start a 'photoshoot.' I keep leaving too much time between shoots and I can't get into a groove. Ramble...ramble...ramble. Sorry to complain. I think that I would be annoyed if I read a blog and the person was just complaining but I figure its better to be honest than try to be like 'everything is fabulous' when its not.
Ok. One thing I'm happy about. I have a massive amount of culinary lavender. Like a LOT. It came in my last CSA box and now all I have to do is let it dry, for a few weeks or so right? and then it will be good and ready of baking. I couldn't figure out where I should let it dry, I thought my kitchen my thats a cluster fuck always. So I set up something in my room to hang it from and now my room completely smells like lavender. It's amazing. One of my favorite scents. So fresh. So clean.

If you haven't noticed, I've switched over to weigh measurements for my recipes instead of cups. I know this will probably annoy most of my fellow americas, but you really should just buy a kitchen scale and be converted. It's so much easier. No worry about, oh did I pack in the brown sugar enough? did I spoon the flour into the cup properly so it won't become tough? Just WEIGHT IT. All your worries are gone.
